But that can never be actually confirmed, because Microsoft won’t play that game.įollow me on Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. While yes, both consoles suffered them, with unlimited supply meeting demand, I have to believe that the PS5 would be miles ahead of even the PS4’s old pace here, and that supposed 10-12 million gap between Xbox and PlayStation that exists now may continue to just widen and widen over time. Part of me has to think that things are only this close because of the unprecedented supply shortages for PS5, however. It’s also at least partially a contributor to lower console sales, given that many Xbox games can be played by console-free access to Game Pass on places like PC, or increasingly, mobile, with Xbox Cloud Gaming. Of course, Microsoft does have Xbox Game Pass with over 25 million subscribers, a valuable part of its arsenal. But Sony’s lead is so vast that it’s just not going to catch up to them for a close generation like we saw with the PS3 and the Xbox 360 (87 million to 84 million). So, two things are true, the Xbox Series X/S has been better received and is generally performing better than the Xbox One at launch. With 32 million PS5 sales, current estimates put Xbox X/S sales at maybe around 20 million units. But they are also likely to still be lagging significantly behind. The best we can tell from current outside estimates is that the Xbox Series X and S are not being outsold by the PS5 by quite the same 2:1 margin as last generation. The failure to report unit sales has continued into this current generation, where Microsoft is more likely to report Xbox Game Pass subscriber numbers instead, which it views as just as valuable, if not more so, than actual console sales.
